Free Pattern - Ribtastic Cardi

I am so so so excited ya'll! I have finally completed, test knit, and am publishing my very first knitting pattern! Whooooo!
First of all, I have to say hats off to all of the fabulous knitwear designers out there. Seriously, this ish is hard. There is so much math involved, and numbers are not my strong suit. But after some serious calculator skills and some math checking my by science-minded hubby, this pattern is ready to go!

So, I present to you...... (drumroll please)..... The Ribtastic Cardi!

The entire pattern is presented below, but the pattern is also available HERE in PDF form.

Ribtastic is a top-down raglan cardigan made out of worsted weight yarn. It features a decreasing rib pattern along the bottom, and pockets made using short-rows, to appear continuous with the decreasing ribbing of the body.

As a smaller disclaimer, I have done my very best to ensure this pattern is free of errors. However, it is my first design. So if you encounter an error or pattern instructions are unclear, just let me know and I'll attempt to fix it. Thanks so much!

  1. Thank you for the pattern, I sure will make one (some day, too busy right now). :)

  2. Thank you so much for sharing this pattern. I cannot wait to buy some yarn and start making it - for myself - or maybe one for my sister and then one for myself.

  3. Thanks for the pattern. It looks lovely.

  4. Many thanks for your generosity...it's a lovely cardi and I'd love to knit it :)

  5. Hi! Quick question. In the set up row, you have "PM,PM" is that an error or do I put 2 markers on at once? Sorry if this is obvious, I'm new to reading clothing patterns. Thanks!

    1. Sorry! That is an error. You only need to place one marker there. So you should have 4 markers total after the set up row is complete.

  6. I've been having so much fun knitting this cute cardi. I have a question on the stitch count tho. I'm knitting size 34, but my stitch count after putting the sleeves on waste yarn is 132 (including the 4 cast ons). The pattern says I should have 144, but my math comes out to 132 when I add the initial 56 cast on plus 22 8 stitch raglan increases and 4 cast ons. Hoping you can enlighten me. Thank you! Holly

  7. Wouldn't the original cast on of 56 be minus 16 tho for the sleeves? So 21x4=84 plus 40 original cast on for the body?

  8. My stitch count does not match the number given. Am I missing something? Cast on 62. When I separate sleeves and body there is a problem. HELP

    1. yes, there was a math error. The pattern has been corrected and updated. Sorry about that!

  9. I am also having some trouble here. After taking off the stitches for sleeves, I have 140 on the hook. I'm ok with that discrepancy ( I should have 144), but I'm confused about the (RS) Increase 0 (2,2,3,1) evenly on this row. Does that mean only increase 2 stitches on the entire row? So I would end up with 142 and continue with that number for the whole body?
Thank you for making this pattern. I've been wanting to knit a cardigan for some time. This is my first one.

    1. Yes. You would increase only 2 stitches on that row, and then continue with 142 for the rest of the body. This is because you need a multiple of 4+2 for the body so that the ribbing works out correctly on the bottom of the sweater. I hope that helps.

  10. I'm having an issue with the ribbing rows on the bottom of the cardigan. I understand that each RS row should be adding a P2, K2 to get the angled affect going on, but that's not what the pattern is telling me to do. It's not adding up. Instead of increasing the number of (P2, K2) each time, each row just says to do it twice, and to not continue the pattern where it is already going. Do you see what I mean?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The issue starts with Row 13, I believe

    2. I have the exact same issue! I've done it as I thought it should be until I've got the entire rib complete across the back. It looks the same as the photos online. Would be good for the pattern to be updated though.

    3. I am also having a problem with the bottom ribbing. At Row 13: (K2, P2) 3 times, K30, (P2, K2) 2 times, P2, Knit to 56 sts from end, (P2, K2) 2 times,
      P2, K30, (P2, K2) 3 times
      Row 14: (P2, K2) 3 times, P30, (K2, P2) 2 times, K2, Purl to 56 sts from end, (K2, P2) 2 times,
      K2, P30, (K2, P2) 3 times

There is no way it can be 56 stitches from the end, and continue the ribbing pattern. And it continues from there not adding up for the "stitches from the end".
Also, I'm confused about how the ribbing is to play out; from the pictures, it appears as though the ribbing starts from both sides of the body and gradually makes the steps to the middle mirror image. If that's so, then why is there a random part of the rib starting in the middle? Help?!
      Thanks!

    4. I’m having the same problem. I’m an experienced knitter, but something isn’t quite adding up here. Other commenters on this thread have asked the same question, but no replies from the author...

    5. I am also experiencing this same confusion...I might just create a straight ribbing across the bottom but I do want to know how to do it the way the pattern shows.

      Delete
    6. Starting at Row 13 the number of times you do the ribbing after the space for the pocket, you will do (K2, Ps) 3 times. Then the stitch count is correct.
Row 15 the number of (K2, P2) is 4 times.

  11. I think a simple fix after row 13 would simply be "continue in this manner by adding a set of k2p2 on every knit row on each side of your work until every stitch worked in k2p2 ribbing along edge. WS rows work stitches as they are.

  12. Im wondering about the size. This will be my first attempt at a sweater and I just want to be sure I get enough yarn for my size. So should I be measuring my bust? I'm sorry, I am just so excited to make this, and don't want to be short yarn. Thanks for sharing your pattern!

  13. I have never made a sweater before. How many stitches are we meant to take off for the sleeves? It says stitches, but does not specify how many.

  14. Hi I love this cardigan. I have been knitting and got to the bottom ribbing and everything was working out fine until I got to row 13. For some reason I end up with 4 stitches that I don't know what to do with. I have been trying to get through that row and it just isn't making any sense. I am stumped.

  15. Thank you for sharing, and congratulations on your first pattern! I am looking forward to making this, once I finish about 4 other items LOL! It is a beautiful design. :)
